Unusual Reasons For Back Pain

If you have ever had low back pain, you have probably attributed it for standing on your feet all day, twisting the wrong way, or straining a muscle. While these are some of the most common causes for back discomfort, there are other, less common reasons for your pain. Here are some unusual causes for a low backache and what you can do about them:

Cystitis

If you have ever had cystitis, or a bladder infection, then you know how miserable one can be. Not only can cystitis cause painful or burning urination, it can also cause blood in the urine, chills, fever, and urinary frequency. It can also cause pelvic pain and pain in your lower back.

If the pain travels from your lower back to your mid back or flank area, it may indicate the presence of a kidney infection. While many cases of cystitis and resultant back pain clear up on their own, you should make an appointment with your physician for a urinalysis.

If your urine test comes back positive for bacteria or blood, your doctor may prescribe a course of oral antibiotics. While you are waiting for your antibiotics to take effect, try using a heating pad turned to the low setting to help relax the muscles in your back, and then try taking an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Heat and analgesic medication will help relax your bladder so that spasms are less painful.

Food Allergies

Another unusual cause for lower back pain is food allergies. Certain allergic reactions from food can trigger a systemic inflammatory response with subsequent cytokine release. When this happens, you may experience joint pain and pain in your back.

If you notice that you feel unwell or in pain after eating certain foods, talk to a chiropractor, like those at Davison Chiropractic. He or she will help you determine if you have a food sensitivity and may suggest therapeutic massage or spinal manipulation to help relieve your pain.

Massage and spinal manipulation can help improve range-of-motion and can also help relax the muscles and surrounding structures in your back. These chiropractic care interventions may also help you sleep more soundly at night to further promote healing of your back.

If you develop pain in your lower back that fails to resolve after a few days, make an appointment with both your chiropractor and your primary care physician for examinations and effective treatment options. When you work with both of these professional healthcare disciplines, you are more likely to enjoy a more favorable prognosis.
